If you've read the last article, you'll know that down time is essential to recharge and refresh your mind, body and soul.
After you read this- you'll learn (some) of my secrets of staying balanced with a crazy, unpredictable schedule.
I consider these factors while planning each day:
What is my daily menu?
I find if I don't have at least a general guide line or go to options, it's easy to resort to unhealthy or quick options. Breakfast is your fuel to start your day- why not kick start your body with solid nutrition?
Unless on vacation or out to a boozy brunch with friends, my usual breakfast options consist of either oatmeal/steal cut oats with berries for natural flavour/sugar, my fav smoothie creation (oatmeal, kale, avocado, peanut butter, banana, strawberries, blue berries, chia seeds, protein powder) or 1 scrambled egg with onions, tomatoes, mushroom, green peppers, avocado & a bit of goat cheese.
Salads ranging in variety topped with any veg that i'm craving. I cut meat out of my diet two years ago, so i'll usually add shrimp, tuna, salmon, chick peas or eggs for protein. Hummus and mushrooms/tomato or whole wheat pita is another lunch option for me, or quinoa tofu bowls (tastes better than it sounds)
Dinner: I tend to be a little more open for fun range for dinner as long as portion control is on the forefront of my mind. Guyanese/West Indian food is my absolute favourite cuisine (Pumpkin & Roti is life), Sushi, Baja Fish tacos or Veggie stir fry, veggie burger (no bun) is high on my go-to list.
When on set it's important to have restraint as the craft tables are over loaded with every possible option. I don't deny myself anything if I want it, but the key is balance in all things!
What is my daily workout?
My Girly Ninja routine is a necessity for me. My body is accustomed to demanding physical activity from years of competitive martial arts and dance. My personal blend of stretches, karate, ballet and weights not only keeps me fit, but it ensure my flexibility is maintained, my grace for walking in heels and on camera is practiced, my strength stays strong and consistent, etc. I can feel the difference in my body after one day of not working out, so I need to make the time to factor that in to my schedule. I also do pole dancing lessons, trampolining and boxing for alternate physical activity if i'm looking to switch up my personal practice.
What is my goal for the day?
Whether it be to meditate, eat more protein, or call my auntie in London, I always set at least one goal to accomplish that is separate from my job. Working on film sets can consume your life, schedule and any hope of social activity. In order to not get lost in the land of make belief, I add this factor into my daily equation to remind myself to progress "Melinda" as well as whichever character i'm pretending to be! (If only I had figured this out when I was in my teenage years..)
What crystal do I need the most today?
Each crystal has a unique meaning and purpose. It acts like a battery when charged to give added vibrational energy to your body's natural frequency. Tigers eye is mainly used to attract courage, Black tourmaline to ward of negative energy, Rose quarts for love, etc. Depending on what I need a boost of or what I need to remind myself of is how I pick my #COTD (Crystals of the day) I cleanse and recharge them once a month, keep them under my pillow at night, in my purse, pockets and dressing room during the day, on me via jewelry (even while I sleep). Its not uncommon for security at the airport to say "Man this purse is heavy, what do you have in here.. rocks?" Hehe..
What is my makeup look(s) for the day?
If I'm on set, i'm not in full control of my looks or makeup changes/touchups. But on my own I range from "errand look", "workout look", "acting coaching look" and everything in between. My usual off set look for a relaxed day consists of mascara, winged top eyeliner, under eye concealer & lipstick. For working out I keep it to mascara and lipstick (feeling cute gives me motivation to workout harder) and I wear ZERO makeup for my private acting classes. The goal being to be an open, empty, vulnerable canvas. I wear a black turtle neck a la classic old Hollywood, and my hair is kept clean and simple.
I have a full makeup kit on me at all times (except in a night out clutch). I never know when i'll be called to an event or meet up with a friend or for a last minute audition, it's important to always be prepared!
What are my outfits for the day?
Again, ranging from workout attire to event attire, heels, jewels, clutches, casual, baseball cap, sweater if its chilly, sun glasses if i'm trying to keep a low profile etc.. PREPARATION IS KEY! I hate not having everything I need on me at all times, to the point where my lovely dolls at Sparks Salons always point out that i'm attached to my carry on roller luggage. (In my defence i'm usually there for services either before or right after a trip or from set!) Girly maintenance is mandatory!
Who do I need to contact/respond to?
My emails are forever overflowing, from personal to managers/agents/publicists to Miss Conception Mentoring, I love being hands on vs getting assistants to handle my business. I moved out on my own at 16. Growing up I went through a few assistants and realized early on that no one will 1- care about managing your life with the dedication as you will, 2-it takes more effort to relay your response to the third party than to respond yourself, 3- It takes away from the personal interaction aspect. I'm grateful that people are genuinely interested in mentorship via my own Miss Conception Methods and I am SO PROUD to share them. I created my program, I live and breath it, I get results from it.. so why not be the one to convey my message myself? "Chop your own wood and it will warm you twice" is something I learnt two years ago and I have NOT taken that saying lightly. I've grown to be obsessed with being self sufficient after years of not being able to do much for myself because my schedule owned ME vs the other way around. Hence why Im sharing my secret balancing act ;)
What do I need to learn today?
Whether it be to cook a new meal, learn to do laundry, book flights, read one more chapter of the book you've shelved mid novel, there is always something to learn. I went from having a person to do everything I needed to do (a cleaner, dry cleaner, driver, manager etc) to depending on myself. (Okay, so I still don't drive myself around, but at least I made time to get my full license!) I felt like a big baby until I decided to own my responsibilities even if I had the luxury of someone else doing it for me. There is something so POWERFUL about knowing how to do everything it takes to live a happy, self sufficient, simple lifestyle and I can honestly say I feel like much more of an adult calling my own shots. (I only starting booking my own flights two years ago, prior to that I had NO idea how. Not because it was hard but because someone else took on that role for me.) I appreciated it, but if I didn't learn for myself, i'd feel forever dependant. How was I supposed to grow into a mature adult if I could handle my own life??
What is my daily grounding/wind down routine?
A glass of red wine is an appropriate response when celebrating or catching up with siblings, friends or co workers. Usually, my normal wind down routine is what I NEED after a day on set. Although being in front of the camera is when i'm happiest, acting is a high demanding, stressful job. Interacting with SO many people, having to be in full, heightened "on" energy mode, it's not surprising that i'm often left feeling drained and depleted of ...everything. The first thing I do after a long day is shower, then clean my bedroom/hotel space until perfection (there is something calming to go to bed and wake up in a tidy environment vs a chaotic mess), I choose my attire and pre pack my purse/luggage for the following day, then light my space with candles and no artificial light (after a day on set its not rare to have headaches from bright lights in your eyes for hours on end, additionally - candles ignite a powerful, courageous energy needed to recharge for the following day), I then sit in absolute silence, memorize my lines, journal and meditate until I fall asleep.
There are always varying factors to my routine and GOING WITH THE FLOW is part of my lifestyle and career. However it does help to have a blue print that i'm in charge of, created for me, by me.
